Moving from Petrol / Diesel to an Electric Vehicle

How, where and when you Charge a BEV matters if you are concerned about current  fuel / energy costs and convenience.

The Facts

A Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) does not require 'wet refuelling' at a fuel station / 'petrol station' that you may have been used to with a Petrol or Diesel Powered vehicle.

A BEV may be recharged from any suitable electrical outlet *.

In order to switch from a Petrol or Diesel vehicle -  you will need to be able to Charge your BEV either at Home, at your Workplace, on the Public Street or at a High Power Publicly accessible Rapid / Ultra- Rapid Charge Point / Charging Station.

Note:
The vast majority (92%) of existing UK BEV owners and drivers DO have the possibilty to Charge from their Home Electrical Supply reducing their costs considerably and indeed this is one of the major advantages of EV ownership and one of the main reasons people have made, or are currently considering the switch to a BEV.

If you wish to drive / own & run a BEV - it is important to understand that if you DO NOT have the possibility to Charge from Home / Work - you will find BEV ownership more complex, less convenient  and more expensive than those who can Charge at off off-peak times via a Home Smart electricity tariff.

If you currently drive either a petrol or diesel vehicle it is a good idea to work out how much it currently costs you so you can make an accurate comparison to the costs to run a BEV.

You should consider:

Insurance Costs
VED Costs (Tax)
Petrol / Diesel costs vs Charging Costs
Maintenence Costs / MOT Charges as well as consumables like tyres.

If you only Charge at the most expensive Charging points you will find that your Energy costs may be MORE than Petrol or Diesel. Diesel cars are around 15-17 pence* per mile to operate.

As long as you consider and understand these important points and carry out your own due diligence - there is nothing to stop you from owning / driving a BEV.

Many people wish to switch to a Cleaner mode of Transport and choose an Electric Vehicle soley for that reason.

Many people now also lease cars for a monthly fixed cost or obtain a Battery Electric Vehicle via a workplace salary sacrifice scheme, in favour of an outright purchase, further reducing their financial exposure to depreciation and taxation.

Addendum November 2025:

The UK Government has recently announced plans to introduce a Pay-per-Mile additional Tax for Electric Vehicles from 2028 of 3 Pence per mile for Battery Electric Vehicles and 1.5 Pence per mile for Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles.
